Giacomo Leopardi was
born in Recanati, Italy, in 1798, to a wealthy and cultured family. He became a
sophisticated and prolific philologist and essayist, and was considered by many
to be the greatest modern Italian poet. Affected by numerous health problems,
he died in Naples in 1837, at the age of thirty-eight.
