Julia Hartwig was born in Lublin,
Poland, and studied Polish and Romance languages in secret meetings of Warsaw
University and the Catholic University of Lublin during World War II. Two of
her poetry collections have been translated into English. In 2014, she won the
prestigious Szymborska Prize for her collection Zapisane (Having been
written).
