Philip
Levine (1928–2015) was born in Detroit, Michigan. He wrote numerous books of
poetry, including The Simple Truth, which won the Pulitzer Prize, and What
Work Is, which won the National Book Award. He was named Poet Laureate of
the United States in 2011. Most recently, he received the 2013 Wallace Stevens
Award for proven mastery in the art of poetry from the Academy of American
Poets.
